Business #23Management #2

Netflix vs. HBO. Nike vs. Adidas. Business is war. Sometimes the prize is your wallet or your attention. Sometimes, it’s just the fun of beating the other guy. The outcome of these battles shapes what we buy and how we live.
Business Wars gives you the unauthorized, real story of what drives these companies and their leaders, inventors, investors and executives to new heights -- or to ruin. Hosted by David Brown, former anchor of Marketplace. From Wondery, the network behind Dirty John and American History Tellers.

    Some inaccuracies
I love this show but this series has several small mistakes that make me start to question the fact checking behind it. The Quiznos franchisees from Pennsylvania were from Coopersburg, not Cooperstown. And it references a loan from the ‘Small Business Association’ when it’s actually pretty well known that SBA stands for Small Business Administration.

    Season 90 XBox vs PlayStation
As a full time employee and parent, I never got into gaming (and still have not done so) due to lack of time and other priorities. I had heard of the various gaming companies and consoles but never knew the difference (and also the big $ involved). Thanks for this deep dive and Season 9 and 30, which I had previously listened to) and this great “weave” of this industry within the past 25 years to current date. I had never understood where ActiVision “played” in this overall historical and current drama! Thanks! This was a great listen!

Found an oops in episode 2!
Thanks for doing this series. As a lifelong fan of all brands of 4x4s and a 20 year jeep owner, I’m excited you are telling this story. I write this review to let you know if a little mistake I found at the end of episode 2. The narrator says “Ford vs. Bronco” not “Jeep vs. Bronco”.

Really well researched but minor flaw
Really well researched well told stories that pull you in. The only thing I find a distraction from the story telling is those weird sound effects and voices you add in. They don’t contribute to the story or its comprehension or create any kind of atmosphere, but instead make the wonderful storytelling sound cliched and cheesy.

Love the show. Have some requests for seasons
Big fan of the show, I listen almost every night while cleaning up and packing my kid’s lunches for the next day. I had some requests for new seasons if possible: 1. The War of the currents (Edison vs Westinghouse) 2. Cloud wars (AWS, Google, Microsoft) 3. Autonomous vehicle wars 4. Disney+ vs Netflix 5. Intel vs NVidia vs AMD Thanks!

    Content Declining
Great podcast just getting more woke with each season unfortunately.

    Toy series
Really enjoyed the toys r us versus kb toys series. Sometimes I wonder how some of the true life events are necessarily fully accurate but it does make it more believable.

    Ideas
You guys should do a space race series, or maybe a Quick trip vs Casey’s gasoline wars.

    Incredibly Well Done
The writing for this engrossing show is so well done that even those subjects which on the surface sound like they might be a snoozefest end up being just as engrossing as the no-brainers. The narrator’s manner and delivery is perfectly suited to this podcast, and the way it’s produced in a thorough but relatively stripped down manner means it doesn’t get tiresome with bells and whistles. Just really interesting stories / histories of businesses and their fight for supremacy. It’s funny cuz when I put it like that, it DOES sound like it could be dull, but for any intelligent consumer of podcasts, this one is a sure bet!

    Tasteless ending
What a tasteless ending to the Sun sandwich series. I had to turn off the sandwich tasting episode because it was just awful. I don’t care if those two have a podcast or not, they added absolutely nothing to the series.

    Good stuff
Brilliant podcast. I really enjoy these! Even the ones I think I won’t like, I always end up learning new things and enjoy the narrator. Great podcast! Wondery has more quality than Netflix and hbo max combined 🫶💪 solid!

    Too gay to keep listening
It’s too biased against people who believe that being gay is wrong.

    Love this!!
Very well done. The re-enactments are very realistic and believable. The hosts have good pace and voice sounds. David Brown is wonderful!!

    Shallow, padded-out coverage
On the positive side, the show covers some interesting topics. On the negative side, each episode is thin on content, and is padded it with fictional conversations which sometimes border on insipid. For example, in the second episode about Marvel Comics, there’s a scene in which a couple writers discuss naming a new character which goes something like, “How about Blob, Hunk, hmm.. what about Hulk?” We don’t know verbatim how this conversation actually played out at the time, but it’s a good bet it was nothing like the facile version presented here. Rather than draw this conversation from reliable historical sources, they decided just to make something up, and it ends up sounding like it was written by a third grader. My guess is they wanted to delve into this topic, but did not have enough sources to stretch it out over multiple episodes, so it is stuffed with fictional extra material. Business Wars is advertised as a management podcast, but it does not aim towards management level quality. Also on the negative side, the narrator’s overly folksy style is annoying. It’s a business podcast, not a Cracker Barrel commercial!

    Over the top
I like the storytelling but could do without the fake dialogue and bad voice acting. (For goodness sakes, please find a different woman than the one with the nasally voice and vocal fry!)

    Outstanding
What can I say, one of the best business history podcasts ever…I always learn so much by listening to each episode. Great content; I love learning about the personality of business leaders and the rise & sometimes fall of businesses.

Really enjoying this but obvious questions often don’t get asked or answered
Just found this series recently and am finding it very interesting. However, it can appear to be a little biased by what it doesn’t ask. How can the show make the safety of Airbnb a major issue and never once present any comparable data for safety in standard hotels? I kept waiting for it and it never came. Looking forward to catching up on the parts episodes!!!

Too Engaging For It’s Own Good?
I’ve come to this podcast by way of “Flipping the Bird,” which I also enjoyed. Unfortunately, dramatizations that are not comprised of direct quotes weaken the credibility of this series, IMO.

    Tesla episode- language
Love BW… but listening to the Tesla season, and if you’re going to have profanity don’t bleep it out. Personally I prefer no language since I like to listen to this in the car with my daughter, but if you’re going to put it in why bleep it? Throws off the listening experience.

    Really?
Pretty disingenuous review of regulating TikTok by an individual whose entire existence revolves around tying things to Donald Trump. The government is seeking to ban TikTok because of Donald Trumps Tulsa Rally?! I mean come on. I think there might be a little more to it then that. Do better business wars.

Just a great great podcast. Audio mixing has issues.
How come in every dialog, one character is really loud and one character is really quiet? The audio levels are ridiculous. If you aren’t right next to your speaker or using earbuds, you won’t make out half the convos. That said it’s still a pretty good podcast. It’s not easy to tell these stories in a way that is fun to listen to and engaging, but this podcast absolutely nails it. Just a tiny bit of historical fiction like filling in convos, but not too much. Very listenable. Great podcast.

Interesting but way to much corn dog
The show has interesting topics but I can’t make it thru an episode because of the over dramatization (trying to play parts and voices ) and the annoying duhn duhn duhn music. Just tell the story. The content is interesting enough. You don’t need all the other crap
