This podcast used to be better
The immediate former host did a better job with this podcast. Back then, the podcast covered economy policy and economic metrics. Today, the current host has an irrational hatred of Baby Boomers and spends all his time talking about how great Gen X is. Millennials don’t care.

    Poor changes
Changing this to a short form podcast that doesn’t delve into issues with important facts and stakeholders removes every factor that made this podcast stand apart.

I'll keep listening and give it a chance, but my first experience was a disappointment.
I see a run of five stars, so maybe I'm an outlier, but my first experience with Politico Money was a disappointment. I'm sure Ben you are taking time thinking about this, and it's certainly a hard balance, but I found the level of presentation as half-pregnant, with say the possibility of making entertaining, clever, and even provocative statements on one possible side of the spectrum (and in this regard I thought Victoria Guida was perhaps pulling her punches about what is really driving Trump's attack on Jay Powell, dare say the stock market went down and a short-term thinking POTUS was simply looking for a scapegoat?) and say (as Ben said "maybe we should do a show on it") explaining the yield curve as possibly being on the other. I suggest you choose a side, because right now for me you're delivering milquetoast. History says that the Fed and the demands of politics is in constant clash, and I'd say that's quite interesting, and quite relevant to the present situation, and could have made for quite an interesting whole show subject. Maybe take a page out of the since discontinued Freak Out and Carry On where historian Heather Cox Richardson put things incredibly interestingly in historical perspective, while admittedly both were freaking out about POTUS, which whether you always agreed with them or not at the least showed their passion. Interesting and Politico worthy would be doing something investigative about what it must be like to be POTUS' Treasury Secretary, which I would assume would include talking about Gary Cohn's challenges, and noting that both Mnuchin and Cohn are products of Goldman Sachs, which is a source of perpetual drama and impact and passionate good old fashioned calumny. Also, sorry but I thought Ben and Victoria you don't click. There was not funny supposedly repartee being passed, and I thought accompanied by fake laughs. And asking Victoria whether she enjoyed covering the Fed versus trade policy was a snoozer. Really people ask you that "all the time," Victoria? I do see Ben you got the Treasury Secretary and Larry Kudlow for interviews, so maybe I'm interested in either really learning something or hearing from the people in charge? I'll keep listening and give it a chance, though... I hope that these comments are helpful.

    Disappointing
Lightweight discussions on important topics. Generally good guests too. It’s a shame.

    almost there.
I am a daily Morning Money reader so I was quite excited for a podcast by Ben. the show is great, the guests are interesting but I have to stop at 4 stars for a reason. The questions need to be tougher. I understand it's incredibly hard to remain unbiased/objective in this day and age but you need to ask tougher follow up questions when guests make specific assertions. If I hear more of this I'll certainly change to 5 stars. keep the content coming!

    Potential Galore
Mike, I listen to your Podcast and many others like it. My best advice - talk less and let your guests talk more. Just like when Kai has you on Marketplace, he keeps his questions succinct and to the point, and lets you share your expertise. That's what you should do on your Podcast. Your guests are the "show" so to speak. This will turn a 3 star into a 5 star. An example of what I encourage can be heard on "Exhanges at Goldman Sachs." Some may say it's a little dry, but you get tons of informtion in that 30 or so minutes. Keep working on it. I love the potential!!!

    One of my favorite podcasts
Really enjoy listening to Ben White. He has a nice way of discussing and dissecting policy/economics and presenting clearly, concisely, and in a way that’s easy to understand, even if you’re not an expert in econ (like myself). I look forward to listening to this each week. Ben has great guests and a warm, easy way of interviewing some of the leaders in economics.

Great podcast with Larry Kudlow. A brief history of taxes and economic cycles over the last few decades... for the layperson.

    Awesome
The best podcast for someone trying to learn about the economy related to current news

    I’m learning
I enjoy this podcast, I’m not anywhere near as informed as I should be on topics related to finance and economics and I’m using this as a good source for topics and theories that I can explore in more detail. I don’t know the first thing about interviewing people or producing a podcast, but I do have a few thoughts on how to improve. 1. The personal/sports questions and other small talk are great for quickly humanizing the guest, but they really disrupt the flow (for me) when they are put into the middle of the interview. Relegating them to the opening and closing of the podcast might help. 2. I know you received some comments about your Mnuchin interview and I’ll just add that as a less informed listener it is hard for me to know when I’m being lied to. I kind of just hear one person say something with conviction... and then in your next interview the opposite viewpoint is expressed by someone else with just as much confidence. It would be very helpful if you could provide some context and an idea of what is generally agreed upon in academic/professional circles from time to time. 3. Please remove the whistle sound effect, that was a rough contrast to an otherwise very pleasant show. Obviously take everything I say with a grain of salt and keep up the good work! :)

Let's get it on (the air)
Getting the tires to the roadway with this long form discussion of Money issues with Polituco's Ben White Looking forward to some more challenging and in depth discussions with further guests. Definitely want to hear arguments that can lead to a productive debate.

    Fantastic interviews
This is the only podcast I wake up excited to listen to on “release day.” All the interviews so far have been interesting and refreshingly candid. Keep it up

    Lets hear the guest talk
I liked the Kevin Hasset interview but wished I could hear him talk rather than have politico put their spin on the topic when he got into the weeds.

    1st Episode
Painful and unlikeable. Should have done a soft open and then gotten a different first guest. I'm a hardcore podcast listener.. I need a shower after this one.

    Good Start
I really enjoyed the first episode and thought it was a good start. I hope in future podcasts you go “into the weeds” more with future issues. I enjoy Politico Podcasts for their depth and solid analysis, and I hope the same for this podcast.

Ben White lifts the veil of Mnuchin
Ben is the first to bring out the human side of Steve Mnuchin. Though you may be disgusted by the administration and some of Mnuchin’s past statements and actions, in this interview Ben reveals a likable and interesting person. One of the best podcasts available.
  • seamus58
    Disappointing first interview
I only listened to the Mnuchin interview to hear what he had to say about the tax increases expected for many middle income households, so I was thrilled when White asked that very question. But then Mnuchin waved it off saying it was a "non-issue" because the standard deduction was doubling (which is irrelevant if you already itemize at levels higher than that) and the child tax credit would offset the loss of personal exemptions (irrelevant if your dependents are older than 17 and you aren't income eligible anyway). And are they really increasing the child tax credit the value of a personal exemptions ($4050)? I don't think so. White followed up with a bad pun about SALT and then turned the conversation to baseball. So disappointing. As currently proposed, my family's taxes on AGI of about $160k will increase by about $7600, or 39%. Nothing Mnuchin offered will change that. Even if they should keep SALT deduction (which Mnuchin said he was philosophically opposed to), our taxes would still go up $5k. More importantly, we are not that unusual. Family of 5 (older teens) in a moderately taxed state. I wish Mnuchin was forced to admit some people's taxes will increase significantly and explain why that is a "non-issue." I gave two stars because it was White's first interview, but he has got to challenge his guests more. Otherwise not worth listening to.

    Let’s talk softball
Softball questions for Mnuchin - he is philosophically against the rich paying estate taxes... so what about income inequality that keeps growing? Mnuchin’s fake math was never challenged. Disappointing.
  • KWhitey22
    Has potential
The podcast has potential but if the first interview with Mnuchin is any indicator I wouldn’t expect anything interesting or interviews with tough questions. Mnuchin was allowed to give his sound bites without any type of challenge. He claimed the US is one of the highest taxed nations, repatriotization will be an economic boom, spoke about the estate tax as if it affects ma and pa businesses, and a list of other falsehoods.

    Promising
Considering the vast number of podcasts today, it is surprising that “Politico Money" still manages to fill an important gap. I liked Ben White's informal interview style and choice of discussed topics. However, I was less impressed by the way the moderator let treasury secretary Mnuchin develop his ideas in such a uncontested manner. In order to truly fill the gap, the podcast would need to reiterate this crucial topic from a less biased perspective soon. I look forward to the coming episodes.

    Fun show on big issues
Great podcast. It took topics that are usually boring (even if they're important) and got straight to the core issues. I enjoyed the offbeat questions mixed in with the policy talk.
  • Darin913
    Great start
I wish you asked the treasury secretary a question about GSE reform.

    Very interesting
Ben White ran a great first podcast episode with a big figure in Steve Mnuchin. The two had interesting and insightful remarks on tax reform and the economy.

    Room for improvement
Excited to see where this goes. Please spend more time confronting the guest in their assertions. Mnuchin’s math went over my head at times. I’m not sure you were in board w everything he was saying. In those moments the listener might be lost as well. Gonna keep listening. 👌🏼

    Great start!
I listened to a few ads on Politico Playbook and this podcast delivered on its inaugural episode. Looking forward to many more!
