Search Party: The Podcast

149

In each episode of this hilarious companion podcast to HBO Max’s cult hit neo-noir comedy Search Party, comedian Bowen Yang — a real-life fan of the series — sits down with a Search Party co-creator, actor or writer as well as a celebrity fan to dissect specific themes from the most recent season. Together, the three talking heads will humorously analyze the characters’ psychology, share behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and discuss the most insane moments of the critically acclaimed show, getting fans pumped for Season 4 and inspiring them to re-watch past episodes from a new perspective.

Bowen is Such Brilliant and Thoughtful Host
Man oh man, we don’t deserve Bowen. He brings so much compassion and vulnerability to all of these discussions, which must not be a simple feat given his rising cultural visibility and all the stress that comes with. I really appreciate that this show exists. This salon like chat is exactly what the doctor ordered for any fan of ‘Search Party’ who needs more after finishing the series. Also, this show proves that Bowen could be Terry Gross (if he so pleased). Thanks to Charles and Sarah Violet for creating ‘Search Party’ and thank you to Bowen for taking this gig when he’s already spinning so many plates. You’re brilliant.

    Can’t get enough Bowen Yang
I am now, in February 2021, just starting to watch Search Party from the beginning, which somehow I never got around to before, and the reason is almost entirely that I love Bowen Yang and don’t want to miss out on anything he’s doing. I’m giving this five stars sight unseen (because podcasts are a known visual medium). There’s simply no chance it’s not a five-star podcast.

    Amazing show, perfect host!
The show “Search Party” is so wonderful. The characters are perfectly imperfect, so the humor adds levity and understanding to the situations and events that take place. Bowen Yang is an expert podcaster and blurs the lines between a conversation and an interview. He understands more ‘serious’ television and film as well as comedy, so he’s the perfect person to guide the commentary on each episode. I wish there was an episode of the pod for every episode of the show (not just starting with season 3).

    Shame episode
I was so excited to listen to this podcast as huge fan of the show. First episode I listened to was the Shame episode and immediately lost respect of host: how on earth can someone come so unprepared to talk about shame without knowing what the definition is?!? John Early asked within first 2 minutes to distinguish difference between guilt and shame (totally reasonable question given he was NOT the host) and host didn’t know. He struggled to answer, admitted to being unsure...this was the topic!!! I have no of listening to any other episodes given lack of quality. Such a disappointment. *And in case Mr. Yang didn’t follow up and learn after the fact: guilt = I did something bad. Shame = I did something bad therefore I am bad.

Why are they promoting these when half of season four has already aired? Looking forward to the Hello Ladies recaps.

    Spoilers, Not companion podcast.
I made the mistake of listening to the podcast when I was late in Season 1, and the first episode had spoilers I wasn’t ready for. Great Podcast, but wait until you’re caught up on episodes before listening.

    Uhhhhmmm...
Podcast rule #1: as it is an audible medium, it’s customary to introduce your guests individually so the listener can put a name with the voice and distinguish who is who. That being said, I love Search Party the series and welcome any and all insights from the creators. (Celeb superfans not so much.)

    My prayers have been answered
I’ve been a fan of Search Party for years, and have always thought a podcast would be great for the show. Now it’s finally here, and I could not be happier. Bowen is the PERFECT host for it, providing insight and humor in equal doses — much like the show itself. It’s a delicate balance but this podcast nails it and I love the guests they bring on. Now that season 4 is here I want moooooore!!

    Yikes, Bowen
Bowen’s disdain for this job and half the guests is suffocating

A step above your typical “recap” podcast
It’s like the conversation your smart friends are having in their book club, but about your favorite show, AND you get to just listen pressure-free. This makes it clear that HBO Max understands what they have in ‘Search Party’ in a way TBS didn’t. Every sentence out of Bowen’s mouth has me more and more excited for when he finally gets to create his own streaming dramedy.

There is something so clear to me
If I had the motivation and discipline I would write a whole fan fiction season 4- but I don’t, so I’ll just leave this here. Was it intentional, or has anyone else connected the wizard of oz allegory with search party!? It all came to me when bob was talking to the jury about a “dream” he had, “and you were there, and you were there,” etc. and then when Dory closed her statements with “I just want to go home”. So then upon reflection, was Elliot not seeking courage to be his real Self? (Has to lie to be a whole person of worth) And Portia, did she not need to find heart? (Always abandoned or rejected) maybe Drew didn’t need a new brain, like the scarecrow, but there’s something there, too. The wicked and good witches? April/June ?? And chantel the wizzard behind the disappointing and anti climactic search for meaning? Somebody please tell me I’m onto something !?

Can’t search for a better podcast
I discovered Search Party right before season 3 dropped, and have become a huge fan since watching and rewatching. This podcast is clever, it’s thorough, it highlights the intellectual nature of the show while navigating the humor within the story lines. The deep dives into such dark, fearful moments of the show, and character ethos is next level. Glad this podcast is giving Search Party the thorough undressing it deserves. King Bowen reins supreme, like always. The combo of guests is *chefs kiss*
