One of the best podcasts ever!
I love this podcast! The content is extremely thought provoking, and I have learned so much from it. I also love when there are funny intros!

    Scholarship at its finest!
Matthew Bates a protégé of Scot McKnight delivers on the depths of the scriptures. The best scholarship today for basically free. Take a listen, slowly read the word, and watch your desire for Jesus grow!

    Not the Same
It’s mostly post-colonial perspectives now. Not interested

    Wonderful
A way for people like me who don’t want to dive into getting a doctorate but have a fancy in biblical studies. You should get Timothy Gombis on here to talk about cruciformity and his book Power and Weakness

Serving biblical edification with a side of humor
This podcast is food for my mind as well as my soul. So grateful for the ways it makes me think and enlightens me if new topics. For over 6 years, I have been an avid listener. The content has held consistent quality over the years. Also appreciate the balanced humor.

    The good stuff
I never went to Seminary but I love studying the Bible and sense that now, perhaps more than ever, the local church needs scholarship. On Script exposes you to the scholarly discussion and allows authors to explain themselves and exposes the listener to great ideas. With so many books to read and so little time, this is the good stuff.

Recently I was a stranded motorist on the highway. Many people stopped to offer physical help, which is fine I guess. But one person stopped to offer theological help. He introduced me to this podcast, which I was able to listen to while I replaced the tire on my car. The time flew by as I listened to the humorous back and forth between Dr Johnson and Dr Lynch. One of them is significantly funnier than the other but I won’t say which. The only downside (which almost pushed me to give a four star rating) is that they occasionally have a New Testament episode, which you have to skip through since that is not their area as they are Hebrew Bible scholars.

    Love the convo
I enjoy hearing from great scholars on the things they are involved in. I have been listening for about a year and found some theologians and books to follow up on.

    Best podcast
I’ve been listening for several years now, and find this to be an engaging, enlightening, and entertaining glimpse into the world of Biblical scholarship and theology. I am truly grateful for all that the crew puts into this ministry. It is a service to the church and to the academy. Thanks, y’all!

Long time listener, first time reviewer!
I have listened to OnScript for years, so it’s about time I review it! I love how OnScript helps me keep tabs on what’s new in the wild world of biblical scholarship. There is so much out there, too much to stay on top of everything (and since I’m an Old Testament guy, I usually reas stiff in that field). OnScript is an enjoyable way to learn about what’s happening outside of my field.

    OnScript is a blessing...!
...to listen to scholars discuss their books. I have been watching for several years and have to admit I enjoy most the sessions with the original three hosts (Matt, Matt and Dru) as they are/were always well prepared with thoughtful questions that sometimes pushed the envelope, yet in productive ways that sparked good dialogue. At times some of the newer hosts seem to like to hear themselves talk, and yet do not always seem as well-prepared, or perhaps as able to articulate their ideas on this kind of format. With lots of “um’s” and “like’s” and “y’know’s” sprinkled in. As a result I tend to skip their sessions. And this is not because I prefer Biblical Studies over Theology. It’s more a matter of preparedness and delivery of ideas in a way that has gravitas but also relevance. Sorry for being a curmudgeon but I hope these thoughts at least spark dialogue. I would give the three originators 5 stars and the others 3.

    Engaging and thoughful
This is one of my favorite podcasts, recently discovered, so I have many episodes to hear. But I relish and anticipate each new episode that appears. I like the variety of the topics, love the enthusiasm and thoughtfulness of the hosts, and learn so much. One question I especially appreciate is when the guest expert is asked for an opinion of the most important book written on the topic in the last fifty years or the name of a most influential author. I am introduced to so many new authors and topics. I also enjoy the deep knowledge of the hosts. And now I’ve started listening also to the Biblical World episodes. Thank you OnScript staff.
  • Blake Farley
    Timothy Beal
I don’t see how Beals perspective is biblical or Christian in any way. A complete disregard for the scripture to prove his own point. This would be like reading Marx and coming away with the idea that he advocated capitalism.

    Excellent podcast
Love this podcast. If I may make a request, you should get Thomas Dixon from Campbell University on to talk about his work on “wrath and mercy” in Romans. Cheers!

    Truly my favorite
OnScript combines the greatest medium for podcasts - one on one interviews with biblical scholars and discuss their latest works. Lots of ways they make it interesting, from dry humor to their “speed round.” I’ve always gained so much value from the podcast and the work these guys do. Probably spent a thousand dollars on books based on the interviews alone haha. Blessings!

    The Best of the Best!
OnScript is one of my go-to podcasts each week! The conversations are fascinating, the guests are always intriguing, and the hosts do a wonderful job at guiding the discussion and asking great questions! This show is funny, enlightening, and encouraging—and it’s perfect for anyone interested in the Bible, Theology, the Church, and much more!

    Enriching!
I don’t always track with every idea and concept in the podcast, but I feel enriched by these conversations as they challenge me to think outside my box. Thank you for including us in these many theological conversations! As someone who lives outside of the English-speaking world, resources like these are so refreshing.

Absolutely amazing for anyone interested in current Biblical scholarship.

    Perfect for Graduate Studies
I’m current a MATS student with a focus on biblical studies. This podcast keeps me up to date with recent research when the majority of assigned readings are typically a couple decades old. The hosts ask great questions, often ones I want to ask the author/scholar. The range of topics is also appealing. You’re bound to find something that interests you!

Super helpful analogies for this particular sports fan. I haven’t laughed this much during one of your podcasts ever. Keep up the good work. I really appreciate the variety of topics covered.

    Great, except one episode...
Please don’t have the awful, narcissistic, pseudo-intellectual, patronizing, Ervine Sheblatzm on again Quite the worst guest you’ve ever had in an otherwise excellent podcast

    Great Format
This podcast is such a good format for hearing from experts across multiple related disciplines. A lot of hard work goes into it, and the quality is excellent.

    So dam good !!!!
I love this podcast, it helps me keep up with all of the work being done in theological scholarship. It also helps me think I’m friends with all of these scholars, lol.

    Three casts on pistols
These casts are difficult for the layperson to understand. Too much jargon. Who is your audience - other theologians or laypersons looking for a meaningful conversation about applying faith to real life?? These casts are much better than sermons.
  • ryanmlee
Great except for the silly question segment
It is so cool to listen to these scholars explain their research and give some serious depth to old topics. Thanks for pulling these interviews together! My only request is to get rid of the silly question segment, it never fits and just distracts from an otherwise thoughtful podcast. I have to fast forward through it.

    Great podcast!
I really enjoyed the subject of one of the podcast episodes so I plan on continuing through the episodes. Some of my professors are featured on this also.

I often listen to an episode 2 or 3 times so that I can absorb all the interesting content. This is my favorite.

    Jonathan Pennington
I found this podcast to be really helpful. I took two courses with Dr. Pennington and in both he provided profound insights especially when it comes to his scholarship in Matthew. This book is a great resource too!

    Balanced Scholarly Accessible
This podcast is incredibly edifying to me. The scholars both interviewing and being interviewed are top notch and challenge me to thoroughly think about scripture and theology. I like that the interviews are of Christian and nonChristian scholars alike and find the interviewers to ask excellent studied and relevant questions. There is a great balance of questions between light and heavy, scholarly and fun. I (an eye doctor) have probably purchased and read 10+ books by the authors interviewed/interviewing in my past two years of listening because of this podcast. Those books have been excellent in my spiritual formation and I believe my church body is also edified because of the improvement in my small group/class teaching due to my wrestling with the content of this podcast, authors, and books. Thank you very much for all the hard work OnScript and it’s team put into this podcast. I am very grateful!

Great conversations on biblical studies and theology
I really enjoy the conversations with the wide variety of scholars on the podcast. Some favorites off the top of my head are John Barclay, Dru Johnson (now a co-host), Scott Harower, and many others I can’t remember!

    Informed, nerdy, dry humor
Really enjoy this show. Keeps me informed of what’s going on in biblical theological scholarship, and the personalities of the hosts somehow achieve that special blend of nerd and dry humor that keeps me coming back for more.

    Engaging & Intellectual
I've thoroughly enjoyed listening through this podcast. The guests cross divides in their disciplines and in their theological convictions. Some are emerging scholars whose work is shifting the conversation; others are seasoned scholars whose work has shaped their field in substantial ways. I look forward to each new episode.

    Great podcast!
This podcast has been so informative. The only bad thing is that you will get scads of book suggestions and you can’t decide which should be read first! I very much appreciate the breadth of scholarship that is presented.

    Quality Engagement with Solid Scholarship
As a Ph.D. Candidate in New Testament focused completely on the subject of my own dissertation, I thoroughly appreciate being able to step away from my own work to step into several different and unfamiliar (to me) areas of biblical studies (and theology). These interviews are well-conducted and accessible to those outside the specifics of each guest's work, but also deeply engaging with the material of the Scriptures and the worlds they reflect. I'm grateful for the hosts' humor and the thought they put into each interview, making the time listening time well spent. I highly recommend this podcast to anyone looking for a good look at the field of biblical studies today.

What took me so long to find this podcast?
The good thing about discovering OnScript three and a half years in is that I don't have to wait for the next episode. When I finish one episode, I can go right to the next one. I love that because I love this podcast. It helps me keep on top of the flow of books published in biblical and theological studies, and helps me know what -- and who -- I want to read next. Its strengths are the books and athors chosen, the knowledge Matt and Matt and Co. have of the field and their preparation for each interview, and the humor that finds its way into most episodes. All that keeps me coming back for more. [Side note: I came across another similar podcast recently and subscribed to it. However, after listening to not quite two full episodes, I unsubscirbed. Though the authors featured were a coiuple of my favorites, the interviewer (no offense intended to him) wasn't as insightful as the OnScript crew and the interviews were a bit on the dry side.] I hope this podcast is around for a long time.

Quality Interviews-- a curious mind's dream podcast
Matt, Matt, Erin, Dru, Amy, and Chris do a fantastic job. One of the most frequent responses by their interviewees is "Wow, that's a great question." You can tell the interviewers have done their homework, read the books, and engaged with the material. This has become my go-to source for staying up to date on the world of biblical studies and for developing my must-read list.

    I prioritize this podcast
I’m a current graduate student in theology, and this podcast is very helpful to keep up with conversations in New Testament, and increasingly theological, academics. I use it broaden my understanding in NT studies, and the welcomed addition of Amy Hughes has helped to diversify and increase theological conversations. Thank you for maintaining this podcast, I appreciate it very much!

    Best Bible Studies Podcast
I love this podcast and what it stands for. It’s educational and upholds the virtues of academic community and conversation. I personally would like to hear more from Dru Johnson and scholarship on the Torah and Gospels. So far I’ve heard a lot of discussion on Pauline texts but the content of his epistles would be much more powerful if the viewers were more informed with scholarship regarding the cornerstone texts, namely the Torah and the Gospels. That is literally just my preference and opinion, however. I love the show and can’t wait to hear more.

    Fantastic
This is a must-listen! Subscribe, and you will not be disappointed. I love the variety. The hosts are intentional and generous, and the guests are gems! I’m so happy someone suggested this to me.

I absolutely love this podcast. I am not in anyway in the biblical studies field, just a layman who loves scripture and this is a great way to hear about books, and hear different view points in the biblical realm. The host and guest inspire me to begin a career in biblical studies.
