Nolira is an agronomist tasked with establishing agriculture in a new solar system, but when she wakes up on a now- empty colony ship, the whole of her plan disappears. The ship has been set adrift, with numerous mission-critical problems requiring immediate attendance outside of her area of expertise. Nolira is aided by the ship’s malfunctioning AI, which acts as her confidant and companion during the fight for survival.

    Too much minutiae
I really liked the premise of this story but the first two episodes got so bogged down in details of an endless trip across the ship in and out of airless zones with the ship’s AI repeating the same phrases ad nauseum. I felt like I was getting maybe 10 minutes of actual story in a 39 minute episode. Felt like writers padding the story to stretch it out. Also the lead actress doesn’t help. She doesn’t have much nuance in her performance — and script doesn’t help. She’s basically forced to be at 11 the whole.

    Interesting concept but…
I love the premise of the podcast. But I can’t stand the main protagonist’s voice. When she whines, and there is a lot of whining, her voice is quite grating. Also her Chinese pronunciation is pretty dismal. If you’re going to make the lead a Chinese speaker, at least make sure they can pronounce the tones. Some of the other Chinese-speaking characters in the podcast do a much better job.

A fan of other creations but this?
Have to say that I am a huge fan of Liberty and other similar podcasts like Theatre of Tomorrow and this podcast seems to have promise. The concept is solid and the sound effects are very good. The voice actress for the protagonist though not so good. It seems like she doesn’t know what accent she wants to have. She switches from British to Scottish and then throws in some random Chinese. It’s like she went to a buffet and couldn’t decide what she wanted to eat so she threw a bunch of random stuff on the plate and called it a night. I just finished season 3 and I’m honestly glad I stuck with it. Season 1 was hard to get through but seasons 2 and 3 were worth it. The characters became more engaging and I eventually became invested in Nolira’s plight. I really hope they do another season.

    Decent story…
…the random Chinese dialogue is…bizarre? Confusing..? Don’t know what to make of that or what the writers were going for but it’s hard to follow what’s going on when 20% of it is in a language I don’t speak lol otherwise good story

Other shows bring in garbage media.
When you starts featuring garbage from other stuff not worth the subscription or listening to this junk.

    The constant whining STOPPPP
It isn’t a bad show, but holy cow, I can’t stand the main character…the woman is so whiny and just hella pathetic…I feel like other podcasts show their female main characters realistically scared but still strong. This woman is flailing about and constantly on the verge of giving up. There is no way she would be chosen to do a mission like this.

    Great podcast
I really enjoyed listening to this podcast. The creators had great sound effects and a great storyline. Thank you for doing what you do.

    Great story
The only part that I didn't like was that they spoke in a different language and didn't understand what they were saying. Felt like I was missing stuff. But other than that I enjoy it so far

    Bad
Hard to get into the flow. Too Much whining and I’m not being sexiest the constant crying. And I speak 3 languages but Chinese isn’t one which makes this podcast impossible to follow as a non Chinese speaker
  • DSBoston1
OK, but yes, there are issues
Very minor spoilers. The story is compelling, I've made it to midway of season two. To me the protagonist being overly "whiny" was not the issue. She has a bizarre accent, then switches a lot to Chinese, converses with an AI, , contantly has flashbacks to the past, and currently has a voice in her head. It's sort of a lot to handle, and the ol' "waking up alone on a damaged spaceship" has been done before. And to say that everything that can go wrong does go wrong isn't an exaggeration, she's pretty much the Black Knight from Monty Python at one point. Only to have Teen Space Rescue Force come on and save the the day. "Get a stretcher" they command. Fine, but I thought only a few spots on the ship had atmospehre. Must be a Space Stretcher. But, it's good enough to stick with and continue. Most podcasts like White Vault establish the multilingual aspect of a character and have occasional snippets of other languages, but not this much. As it's been said many times here, podcasts don't have subtitles. With a little clever writing, they could have had the AI do some historical exposition, then we'd know the minimum needed in terms of races, faces, conflicts, etc.

    Please keep political ads out
Literature and books are a great way for us to escape the negativity and problems of the world. Sad irony when the hero of the series risks her life to save embryonic humans while you are forced to listen to pro-choice roe vs wade ads for every episode. Please keep your politics out and stick to producing content. Otherwise it’s a good series.

I can’t wait to see if this story continues! It has been a pleasure listening to this podcast!

    Quality
Excellent character building. Excellent story telling. Excellent production. Excellent voice actors. One of the most in depth character development I’ve seen in a podcast.

    5 episodes in
I really want to like this, but I am so tired of hearing the main character moan, pant, cry, sniffle, and heavily breath. You could make an entire episode or more of just her making these sounds.

Love Love Love - Quality In Every Way
This is one of the few that stands out as high quality- the acting, the story, the sounds…it’s all a combination of what makes these things work as true entertainment!

    Fantastic!
I’m currently halfway through season two and I love it. It’s definitely deserving of 5 stars. Background effects are never louder than the foreground conversation, which is common with podcasts such as this one. I find myself constantly excited about the information we get about the leads past, which is given to us (the audience) in increments. I’m hooked! The storyline and characters are intoxicating! Just a note: often the characters will speak a different language and that can be a bit frustrating. Sometimes it’s explained what was said (in the form of an answer that repeats the question that was asked in the other language) but often it isn’t. So I’m left wondering what was just said. This is something that visual story telling (I.e. shows, movies) can get away with because subtitles can be inputted during those periods, but that is not something that can be done for podcasts. I appreciate that the characters native language is being used, I just wish it was clarified what was being said. It happens several times an episode and it’s sorta like not being included in an inside joke. I have no idea what’s going on and I’m left confused.

    Whimpering
I can’t handle the constant whimpering of the lead. It’s a good show but the whimpering is rather much. Also you lose alot of context with the mandarin

Please Redo with different voice actor
I didn’t know how much certain speech patterns could wear on my ears. I can’t take anymore of the main character's whining after 1 and 1/2 episodes. I am guessing it is an ESL thing. Other than that, this is well done in every regard. I wish I could handle listening to more. I am still curious where it goes.
  • FinalMacGyver
Rough first season but hang on
It was hard to get through the first couple episodes of season one but I’m glad I did. As I’m working my way through season 2 on my daily walk, I find myself walking further and further to listen to more. Amazing podcast!!
  • meliknox
    Quality production
I listen to this when I have trouble sleeping bc the production quality is good and the sounds and the action take me out of my head and into dreamland. And I love the main character’s accent. It makes sense that there would be strangely mixed accents far into the future so it fits the scenario. I’m asleep half way through each episode so I’m not sure what’s going on in the story line. I’ll have to re visit it on a long drive but I’m not sure if I can sit through another first season of her squeaky whimpering. I was glad when i got to season 2 bc the squeaky whimpering finally stopped. I’m amazed I could fall asleep to that. I think her accent kept me intrigued.
  • Stillbecoming
Amazing —just persevere through initial whining
I almost didn’t make it through the initial episodes, bc (as other reviewers mention) the lead squeaks, whines, whimpers, screeches. BUT. BUT!!!!!! It is soooooooooo worth it if you hang in there. It’s going someplace genuinely amazing.
  • Luster99
    Interesting But Language Issues
The premise is good and the performances excellent, but the main character constantly switches between English and what I assume is Chinese (about 25% of her dialogue) and there are no translations so you miss the context. Sometimes there are entire conversations that are not in English so it’s completely useless to listen to them - they just waste your time. If you are bilingual then you will enjoy it - if not, it is just confusing and annoying.

Some of these reviews I swear
Folks complaining that other viewpoints that aren’t theirs are ‘too political’ is just silly. Politics is literally of the people- it’s interactions between people, and rules guiding it. Nothing is actually apolitical, and that’s normal. Show is excellent, and there isn’t profanity- just Mandarin, with translations in the transcript. Some people..

    So far so good
Just finished second episode even tried your in episode commercial take care of.com it didn’t work. If your no longer working with them… thought to let you know that. They almost had a sale thanks to you. Very well produced and I look forward to next episode.

A deep rich layered story ruined by Whimpering
Loved the whole premise -well written but I got to episode 7 and couldn’t take the main character’s non stop whimpering. It became like nails on a chalk board. Bless you folks for your amazing overall talent, but this was a swing and a miss.

    Love it
Love it. Love that all the voices and accents are different. Love that it’s Sci-fi with a female lead. Too fun. Keep it up!!! (Listening to The White Vault…I’m obsessseddddd). You’ve got a fan in me!!!

Amazing like everything fool & scholar makes
I started this show 4 days ago and I was so enthralled I finished every episode. I’d like a season 4 but it seemed like the end of 3 could be a good end to the series.

    Engrossing
Love this podcast, and I'm not usually a sci-fi fan. Very impressed at the creativity and imagination.

Another fantastic series by Fool and Scholar Productions.
This is a really good audio drama. So far and I’ve been listening to podcasts for years and years that their series are my favorite. They really develop their characters. The plots are always great. This particular series is science fiction but definitely explores a lot of complex themes. Like most so far they have some darker elements to them.

So a to mass murderers get to make a cult.
So I loved this pod cast by the end I was realign from laughter as what I consider from our history a nazi scientist gets to live in peace SPOILERS with some adjustments not to give everything away. A mass murder meets a god that thinks there the same, they are. One makes a weapon that by are standards today would give everyone involved the chair for it. God is mad thinks there better but is just like a dictator or cult leader. All supporting cast are super right in thinking of main character is a bad person that’s trying to make up for it but flash backs show ether she is complacent or only willing to act not to get in trouble or to sooth her Conscience. The ending just had me dying man I hope she’s miserable for the rest of her life. Oh and show our Trenan boy some love!

    Season 4 of vast horizon?
I love this sci-fi series so much that I listen all the way form episode 1 season all the way through but I want a season 4 of vast horizon I feel like season was too short.

Why are the updates so slow?
Sorry to submit a slightly negative review. I do love Fool and Scholar’s shows. I’ve listened to Liberty and White Vault. I don’t remember ever waiting so long for new episodes. When there are 5, 6 or more weeks between new episodes, it’s hard to stay interested. I’m a little concerned that Kaitlin or Travis is having some kind of problem. What’s going on?

    I’m hooked
Well, I started with The White Vault. Then I binged through it. And then I binged through Liberty. Now I’m impatiently waiting for the next Vast Horizon episode to drop. I am thoroughly enjoying Fool & Scholar productions and the variety of created worlds, please keep it going!! My long commutes have been exponentially better since happening across your productions. Thank you!
  • jaevans52
    So whiney and no descriptions.
On episode three and she is so whiney even in Flashbacks… Throwing around words, locations ect… with zero background description is super lazy and anti-world building.

    Another fantastic podcast!!
This is my second podcast series I’ve listened to by Fool & Scholar and… wow. They don’t miss! Well done as always! Keep up the great work!!!!

    Great story and very creative!
I think the use of flashbacks and kind of weirs dream sequences is very creative and makes the show unique. Nolira has an interesting story, although I will admit she does cry a lot? Lol. I enjoy Ally’s and Sanon characters a lot. Daniel Demarins performance and voice are beautiful. I go back to listen to any section with Sanon in it 🥰. Ally is strangely sympathetic but you really can understand both her and Nolira’s perspectives.I like the robotic over tone to the Trenen voices, as well as how other species and planets are integrated into human societies. Episodes come a bit slow, but I’m willing to wait and understand these things take a long time.

    Phenomenal
I binged this after catching up with the white vault and it doesn’t disappoint. The characters, who felt okay to start, have grown and developed, to the point that I’m pleasantly aware that I care for them and their desires. A terrific project from Fool and Scholar. Thank you.

    Mixed
Good story, but the writers should stick to story telling not be activists and speak on political things. Got to season 2 and lost interest immediately. All lives matter.

    Out of this world
Ideal format and structure for the story. Writing, dialogue, and soundscape are outstanding. Voice actors are well suited for and believable in their roles. Production is flawless. Cool cover art, website, & merch.

    Alarmingly Engrossing
This is just ONE of the many engrossing tales which this team of Fool and Scholar productions has brought to the world. I have spent many hours entertained by these tales and look forward to many more! Thank you all for these and thanks again to all the great actors in them!
