U22 The Centenary Ulysses Podcast

19

U22 is about readers' journeys through Ulysses, James Joyce’s modernist epic about the lives of ordinary people on a day in Dublin in 1904. The podcast anticipates and accompanies a reader-friendly edition Catherine Flynn is bringing out with Cambridge University Press for the book’s centenary in 2022. Here, she and her co-hosts Rafael Aguilar, Emily Moell, and Louie Poore talk with the contributors to the volume and with readers of Ulysses from around the world. Listen to their first impressions, later realizations, and the challenges and the pleasures they met along the way.

    Excellent
Inviting and enthusiastic, exactly what I was looking for. Guests and the host/crew discuss themes and parallels, decipher cryptic passages, and generally make the reader/listener feel empowered to keep going, not out of duty but out of excitement for what’s next. I’d been meaning to read Ulysses for 20 years and just now getting around to it. So glad I did. Catherine is a great host too and the guests are wide ranging, which I love. Hope they complete the series. 🤞

    Inspired and inspiring guidepod
I have now enjoyed Catherine and Emily’s podcast through Circe twice, the second reading to assure that I had given full attention after taking extensive notes the first time. I find the presentations to be scholarly and insightful yet approachable. Essayists and interviewees from a rich palate of cultures spice the stew, taking the experience up a degree. My practice has been to read an episode while listening to the RTE Players podcast tha U22 recommends, then listen to the companion podcast Reading Ulysses with Fritz and Jerry, then top it off with Catherine et al. My second U22 listening has been inspired by the (early!) delivery of the Cambridge addition of Joyce’s masterpiece, which any lover of the novel must find indispensable and delightful. What did I do during the Pandemic? I read Ulysses, what did you do. While I was reading Ulysses aloud with my wife last year, I discovered your podcast and was delighted to hear so many recommendations to read it aloud, advice that we enthusiastically endorse. Like so many of your guests, I came to Ulysses by way of Portrait of the Artist, which I read in high school. I was 17 when the film version came out in Washington, DC; one had to be 17 or older and accompanied by an elder. My 16-year-old girlfriend and I were often baffled and embarrassed (we were both attending Catholic schools) but I loved it and viewed it again last year with relish. And like so many I had multiple failures and false starts with the novel before summiting. Now we have been to Dublin and walked in Leopold’s and Stephen’s sidewalks and sand. The experience inspired our dormant belonging to the old country; as several of your guests affirm, this is a welcoming door for the Diaspora to reunite with our unique and vital culture. U22 is a welcoming and helpful resource that will enhance any reading of James Joyce’s monumental work.

    A Perfect Accompaniment to Ulysses80
I’m working my way through Ulysses as a participant in Ulysses80.ie and this is the perfect accompaniment. Every episode is so enlightening. I’m learning so much. What I also love is how Catherine Flynn is sharing her platform with yes Joyce experts but also Joyce enthusiasts and her own questioning and observant students. This inclusion is so refreshing and underscores the everyman vibe of the book. P.s. first ever podcast review!
