Initial Conditions: A Physics History Podcast

Physics #40

Initial conditions provide the context in which physics happens. Likewise, in Initial Conditions: a Physics History Podcast, we provide the context in which physical discoveries happened. We dive into the collections of the Niels Bohr Library & Archives at the American Institute of Physics to uncover the unexpected stories behind the physics we know. Through these stories, we hope to challenge the conventional history of what it means to be a physicist.

    Physics in a different light
When a friend suggested this I was skeptical but it turns out I love physics history! The writing is great and I’m even learning a little bit about physics. A great addition to my podcast line up!

    unnecessarily overly speculative
While the facts and circumstances surrounding Eunice Foote’s work are quite intriguing and the presentation of them is a positive step toward the long overdue exposition of known past scientific work by women; I found the presentation too speculative along the current ideologically driven agenda concerning equity in science. Actual documents such as letters or other supporting records are apparently non existent so it is inappropriate to stretch the known facts to fit such current memes. Such seeming misinformation is perhaps even a dis-service to her actual work if it compromises the size of the audience. An example of this concern is the question (which for some reason was left unanswered) and which might have bearing in regards to her overall attitude toward a career in science: “what was her second and final publication with AAAS about?” An interesting enough start for “Initial Conditions” however, that I will sample a few more.

    This show rocks!
I know this show isn’t about geology but it still rocks! Haha seriously though this show is super informational and just fun to listen to. The couple that host the show are clearly very knowledgeable and I can’t wait to hear future episodes.
