Kat Ellinger has become a genuine go-to in appreciating Cinema of the Supernatural, of the margins, and of challenging the patriarchy. But in her newest venture, she has used the “chthonic feminine,” a concept derived from Camille Paglia’s “Sexual Personae” as a lodestar to unlock the resonance of transgressive female figures in expanding the agency, vibrance, and diversity of women in film, and, perhaps also in life. As always, Ellinger brings erudition, lightly worn, humor, and her own deep love for her subject. It’s a delight to hear her plumbing the depths.
