Shoot the Messenger: Espionage, Murder & Pegasus Spyware

129

Espionage, Murder and Pegasus Spyware come to light in a special partnership between Exile Content Studios and the Committee to Protect Journalists. Hosts Rose Reid and Nando Vila examine the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and his inner circle that had the world's most sophisticated military-grade spyware confirmed on their phones. It's called Pegasus. How did this spyware come to be, how does it work, and how vulnerable are you?

Every other week Shoot The Messenger investigates Pegasus, the Israeli technology company that makes it, the NSO Group, and the cyber war industry that is booming around it. You have heard the headlines — this is the deep dive.

Pegasus and NSO and subsequent findings
Just finished binging all of the episodes and bonuses available. It was extremely informative and filled in “a lot of holes” between the bits and pieces of it that I had heard about it over the years. Also appreciated hearing how owners of a license use it to get the “most value,” as mentioned in “The Click” bonus. Thanks! When is Season 2 coming out re “Who Killed the Haitian President?” There have been numerous references to it ……. The President’s death and information about it caught my attention when it occurred, and even more so with how criminals and/or gangs have taken control of Haiti for the past few months (early-to-mid 2024). Great investigative work!

    A must-listen
Anyone interested in the security & privacy of their lives & that of their friends & family should give a listen. If you love freedom & living in a democracy this is vital information - not politics. So east to listen to & understand. Well done. Can’t wait for Season 2!

    Intriguing
I’m in healthcare by trade but this has opened my eyes to something different and I’m really considering going back to school to pursue something in writing or cyber security. The episodes always kept my attention and I can’t wait for the next season.

    Blind spot or purposeful?
There’s a huge blind spot in this series in ignoring why Israel became the high security state it is and incubator for such projects as Pegasus. It lies in its need to continually oppress and surveil Palestinians. You can’t claim to care about press freedom or safety of those fighting injustice if you ignore this very glaring fact. This omission feels calculated and avoidant, especially against the backdrop of including Israeli voices but not those of Palestinians in the region who are constantly denigrated and used as lab rats for these projects.

    Brilliant!! Scary!! 😱
This doesn't happen without governments' support.

Would Give Six Stars If I Could
I think it should be clear to many at this point that it’s not “am I being spied on?” It’s “who is spying on me?” Information has always been - and will always be - the greatest currency, worth more than money, gold & diamonds. This reporting takes an incredibly deep dive into how the surveillance is connected between countries, businesses & interest groups. While Jamal Khashoggi will never have justice, reporters & their friends, associates etc need to increase their vigilance around communication practices. Even the “gold standard” of encryption- proton mail- might not be as safe as we think if Pegasus (or a Pegasus-type surveillance tool) is being used on a router. Transnational indeed. How can entities who reside overseas engaged in spying on Americans on American soil be held accountable? Or anyone from any other country? If physical borders don’t protect sovereign citizens against transnational surveillance (again, being utilized more commonly than we think) what are the full implications of this? I’m not sure if Shoot The Messenger will be able to answer this in coming episodes, but I hope - and suspect - they’ll try. I’ll have my coffee ready.

    This is f*ing important
Everyone with a cell phone needs to listen to this podcast. Journalists in particular
  • DrTurkeyt00tz
    Interesting, but unlistenable
Contains many poor phone recordings of people with strong accents & they don’t reiterate what was said. So if there is any road noise around you, that’s a third layer of interference that makes large parts of it unintelligible. It seems important, but I guess I’ll just read about it.

Can’t stop listening, one of the best
If you care about journalism, journalists, or democracy, this is a must listen. In an era of lots of podcasts and too little time, this one grabs your attention from the start. I listened to the first four episodes all at once, and then checked every day until the next one dropped. The combination of Rose and Nando as narrators and hosts is perfect, and they do a really good job of sharing a lot of information without overwhelming the listener. I cannot wait for future seasons and topics. Bravo!

    Interesting
A deeper dive into a shocking story that seems to have only touched the surface in mainstream media. This podcast is a revelation of how vulnerable we are in this digital age. Thank you for providing this thought-provoking insight. Looking forward to seeing which topics you unravel next.

    Technology helping Authoritarian Regimes
Great pod - with the rising tide of global authoritarianism an invasive tool of big government is using software to target cell phones and especially journalists and agents of free press and democracy. GM in VaHi.

Compelling - you need to know this happened
This podcast reveals a threat to our privacy that is shocking - and dangerous. And not just a threat to journalists but to everyone.

You’re going to binge this one
And you’ll never look at your phone the same way again. Everyone will want to hear how governments all over the world including in the US are using spyware to surveil us. Big Brother is indeed watching and the hosts, Rose & Nando, show just how it’s done. Scary, but incredible.
  • Bandido1977
    A must listen
A must-listen for anyone concerned about privacy and the use of technology in state-sponsored violence This podcast provides a comprehensive examination of the tragic murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, and the role that digital espionage played in his death. The discussion of Pegasus software highlights the growing threat of digital spying and underscores the need to be vigilant about our online security.

    A truly must listen podcastly
In times when the concept of privacy doesn’t exist anymore, and technology tracks everything we do, it’s important to learn and understand how cyber surveillance impacts our lives and how it is being used by repressive governments around the world to persecute, harass and attack journalists, critical voices and everyone they consider their opposition. Through its in-depth investigative reporting, Shoot the Messenger explains these vital issues using compelling stories and documentation. Shoot the Messenger is a truly must listen podcast.

    riveting and important
i can’t believe i didn’t know the story of Pegasus, which illuminates (scarily) so many different aspects of global affairs right now. this podcast approaches the topic with rigor and respect, but is also deft, thrilling storytelling!

I hope you enjoy listening as much as we loved making it!

    Very Necessary
This issue of espionage of the free press was memory holed past Trump refusing to hold any Saudi accountable. The lack of prior coverage has allowed those guilty to avoid any culpability. Great work to shed some light on this!

    Gripping from the Start
Compelling from the get-go. Super well-reported and totally a worthy listen for anyone interested in international politics, tech, cybersecurity, journalism, and holding higher powers accountable. Run don’t walk to your headphones!

Rethink what you thought you knew
A smart and savvy podcast that dives deep on important topics. Fantastic hosts Rose Reid and Nando Villa take another look at a story we all think we know: the brutal murder of Jamal Khashoggi. Can’t wait for the next episodes.

    Very compelling
I like how this blends two important stories - the death of Khashoggi and the Pegasus scandal - into one compelling podcast! And told with credible, independent voices. We are only now learning how dangerous Pegasus can be to journalists as well as politicians. Hope Mike Pompeo takes the time to listen!

    Mind Blowing Back Story
The details revealed about Jamal Khashoggi’s murder and the last few months of his life are truly shocking. His story offers powerful insights into the depths to which spyware and similar tools impact our everyday lives. A cautionary tale for all of us.
  • exochoa
    Excellent writing and well reported
An excellent explainer about what Pegasus is and the company behind it. The writing is very good and the hosts are engaging.
  • Kipwrite6
    Important and disturbing
This series (episodes 1-2) covers important new ground on a story that deserves to be revisited, and closely studied. The investigative team has done some digging into the role of technology in general, and the Pegasus software in particular, into the death of Jamal Khashoggi and the ongoing threats to journalists and activists. The facts aren't widely known and are frankly terrifying. If you are a writer, journalist, an activist or a concerned citizen who uses a phone, this is worth a listen. Very concerning, and very well done.

    Loving…Shoot The Messenger
I was so excited for Exile to release this series. I’m blown away after just 2 episodes. The series thus far is compelling and eye opening, focusing on the abuse of spyware and the tragedy of how it was used to torture and kill a Washington Post journalist. Truly my favorite new podcast!
