Everything I want in a podcast
Frank and Rivka strike a perfect balance between talking fun and entertaining topics, while also addressing current events and politics. They play well off of each other, have good insights on film and the world, and are self-aware in a way that I find extremely relatable.

    Great but…
You will never get me to dislike Ghosbusters. But yes Venkman is super creepy.

Love, love, LOVE when you guys check in and rant about the current irritations of the day. Particularly because you also suggest different ways situation could be handled. Very much part of the solution, love the discussions, and am deeply grateful to hear others talk about what a mess capitalism has created in the world. Thank you Rivka, Frank, and all at the Lever!

A great combination for movie loving activists.
As an average citizen and creative person in general, this podcast hits both buttons for me. The hosts are engaging and smart, and they have fine guests who dive into the political angles of various movies, many of which I’ve watched more than once.

    Easy and insightful
This podcast highlights how influential film can be. It’s easy to miss how impactful seemingly innocent moments in a movie can be. This podcast can help break into conversations with friends and family about how political our lives are.

    Incredible podcast.
I am barely 20 mins into episode one and I’m already hooked!!! Incredible insight, and the political backdrop is so fascinating. Thank you so much for this, now it’s time to provide my support through a monthly membership.

Critical analysis that’s accessible and unpretentious
This podcast became a favorite so quickly. One of my personal crusades is getting people to participate in nuanced critique of the media we consume What makes Movies vs. Capitalism so great is that it uses a vocabulary that the audience is already familiar with to explore themes they probably have feelings about, but haven’t been able to articulate. It’s such an easy way to start engaging with discourse in a way that opens doors rather than shaming people into not knowing enough. After a few episodes of MvC you will start to see things in the movies and tv shows you watch. You’ll notice themes and pick up on things with a new point of view. It’s the sort of skill that can help anyone and everyone as we’re forced to participate in capitalism. And it helps build a “practice what you preach” mentality without shaming you for not knowing the praxis.

    Intro is too long
Heard about this podcast on The Lever podcast. Tried to listen to the episode about “You’ve got mail.” 17 min in and the hosts still haven’t started talking about the movie. As much as I respect your cause, my attention span does not allow me to listen to a podcast that takes forever to get started :/

As intelligent as it is intentional
I don’t (or didn’t) identify as anti-capitalist but have enjoyed MVC more than many podcasts I’ve tried discussing media and culture. The hosts are thoughtful and entertaining, and the production value is excellent. I also appreciate the practice-what-you-preach position and platform partnership with The Lever - even as a former corporate media broadcast producer. Deserves donations!

    The power of ideology
Well orchestrated and yet spontaneous in its conversation flow. Very informative regarding how powerful ideology is in the context of the politics of cinema and the manifold ways ideology is concealed. Also very suggestive with regards to the political contents of commercial mass media.

    Great perspective on cinema
Just like Cinemasins’ podcast, you can’t listen to this without learning new things about the subtext of movies you may already know but without having thought about from these angles. Highly recommend !

    This is fun, engaging, smart!
This is fun, engaging, smart - and it makes me think again about films I have seen… Frank and Rivka are great hosts and commentators. I heartily recommend it!

Love the concept, but I have a note on execution.
I really like the concept of this podcast. Viewing cinema through a anti-capitalist. Lens isn’t just interesting, and it is, but it’s important, because there really are messages that are ingrained in our culture which art reflects, sometimes accidentally, and sometimes intentionally. It’s good to examine which messages are which. I’d like to offer a suggestion. I think the podcast could benefit from a more chronological flow of the piece of art being dissected. Not necessarily a communist book report on a particular movie, but more like a one off book club for that movie where the listener, the guest, and the hosts, take a journey through the movie and explore its themes as they emerge. please take this criticism with the spirit it was meant. Please keep up the good work.

    Great but
Having a guest like Carla Marie Davis, her point of view, her set of concerns- it diminishes your project

    The critical analysis we need
To counter all the far right culture warriors that have shaped mainstream discourse. Love this quote that I learned from this podcast: “ the role of the artist is make the revolution irresistible”
  • Revs2018
    Wonderful podcast
Everything the Lever produces is high-quality (I’m a subscriber), but this one allows the listener to have a bit more “fun” thinking about the intersection between the arts and anti-capitalist social movements.

    Great for artists!
As a writer who is trying to create Leftist work, this is nothing short of inspiring!

A Fantastic Change of Persepctive for Movie Fans
A great podcast for movie fans that shifts perspective on how me may have originally viewed our favorite films. Helps spread knowledge and awareness around anti capitalism by sharing the lens with well known films. Learning more than I had thought and excited for future releases!

    Loved it
Loved the first episode. If you’re a lefty, actor, writer, director or film nerd this is a great listen. They break down how pop culture and movies are a reflection of the political climate. Can’t wait till the second episode. Great programming from The Lever. Also the hosts are insightful and relatable. Lots of lefty content seems like it’s made for academia but this really speaks to a wider audience. Great job all around.

    Great Debut!
Excellent first episode. Loved Ghostbusters when I saw it in ‘84. Upon reflection, very problematic. Looking forward to your next one! Thanks.

    Forget Peter Venkman!
Very interesting and thought provoking work. Especially enjoyed Rivkas assessment that maybe, as we get older and more aware, these films should be looked at with a more critical eye. Looking forward to the next one!
