Sandcastles

103

Season One: The Point Dume BombersOn the night of the Woolsey Fire, no one could have imagined where they’d be today–they couldn't think much past survival. It was life or death. But in the days and years that followed what this unlikely band of surfers pioneered could have global consequences. When emergency first responders were overwhelmed by Los Angeles County’s most destructive fire, these neighbors and friends stepped up to defend their home turf in Point Dume, Malibu. Their devotion to home drove them to show up for their community in ways no one expected-not even them. Sandcastles is a podcast about home, how we create it, and why we fight so hard for it. Excellent Storytelling
While keeping the listener interested with well edited suspense, the storytelling and representation of the strength in community is absolute perfection.

One of the best stories of resilience around!
Despite the devastation that a wildfire can bring to any community, Adriana brings us a story of resilience and hope. And community and “home”. Worth every minute of every episode! Would give it more stars if I could!

    Sand Castles 1
Having survived a house fire, this series brings back the fear and sadness of that experience. It is so interesting and puts the listener right in the center of their firefight. Well written and artfully produced. I’m a fan of Sand Castles.

    Great series!
Interesting, informative and moving. Very well done series that paints an accurate picture of what it’s like to live through a wild fire.
  • Robert Spangle
    Excellent, accurate and compelling
Not only excellent, in depth professional journalism, but a evocative and moving record of the Wolsey fire, and by mikes and years the best one produced to date

    Fantastic!
Authentic and contemplative, this takes an immersive dive into the surprisingly under-documented legacy of fire in Malibu California, not from the perspective of multimillion dollar estates as seen on most media but from an old school working-class Malibu that was there long before anyone else. An insulated multigenerational community surrounded by lore with volumes of hometown pride and an elevated skepticism of outsiders. What I imagine to be a hard nut to crack journalistically, Sandcastles does a great job getting firsthand accounts on everything from history and surfing to the harrowing moments during the 2018 Woolsey fire from a generally non-chatty bunch and diving deep into the fascinating history of this rugged and storied coastal fringe of Los Angeles.

    Simply Incredible
A superbly well done piece about a group of hometown heroes battling the Woosley Fire and saving as much of Point Dume as possible. The research that went into this story is fascinating. I love how it goes into their relationship history along with the history of Malibu. I remember those horrific days in November of 2018 sneaking back into our house in the Santa Monica Mountains after two huge fires.

    Essential Listening
What a great series of episodes this podcast presents. I listened continuously and it had me thinking of how I might function in the new community we joined a year ago. Essential listening for everyone in the U.S., to educate on disaster preparedness. Very few in America are truly prepared.

    Epic! Riveting!!! And highly addictive!
I literally don’t want to leave my car because I’m binging on this series. Sure you’ll learn about one of the most destructive fires in the history of California but you also get so drawn into the crazy menagerie of characters that you’ll want to take the long way home.

    Impressive reporting and storytelling
This show is clearly a labour of love, each episode told with tons of heart. Adriana is a great reporter with a warm human touch to her narration. I learned a lot about Malibu, wildfires, surfing, community resilience, pride and stubborn bravado anyone can inherit, and so much more. Great listen!

    Wonderful Podcast!
My name is David. I work for Surf City Tours based in Santa Monica. I operate a daily, 5.5hr tour along the coast through the 21 miles of beautiful Malibu and am honored to tell the story of the Point Dume Bombers to my passengers as we ride through the Point Dume neighborhood everyday. I take pride in sharing their story and it’s truly amazing to hear these stories in detail of how they were able to save their neighborhood from complete destruction. I first learned of the Point Dume Bombers from the book, “Malibu Burning” by Robert Kerbeck, another fantastic resource of information about the Woolsey Fire. I applaud everyone who fought so hard to save Malibu. Also, a huge THANK YOU to Adriana Cargill for producing this podcast. I will make sure to inform every group I have about this podcast on my tour going forward. Thank you everyone involved. Kudos!

    Great Reporting/Historical Context
Amazing; if you have ever lived or visited Malibu this is a must listen.

    Excellent!
Great storytelling and reporting! I’ve listened to all 3 episodes with my husband and 10 year old daughter (potty mouth no worse than my own) and we can’t wait for the rest! Compelling and heroic subjects walk us through this remarkable chapter in recent Malibu history. A must listen for all surfers, Californians and anyone concerned with community resilience in the face of climate change. I love the added historical context and archival mixed into the edit along with excellent soundtrack and audio mix. Thank you for this podcast series!

What it’s like to be claimed by place.
This pod cast reaches into the heart of Malibu as a way of life that is never portrayed in the celebrity media. Adrianna shows us what it means to be claimed by place. The story Adrianna tells highlights what is lost when generational wisdom is not passed down because we can’t or won’t stay put. This brought tears to my eyes, because I like most of society grew up with the poverty of not belonging to a place.

As a Point Dume native (though I currently live in NorCal) I appreciated the respectful and reverent portrayal of our community. Only two episodes in and will for sure keep listening. Kirby and Runyon and all the old school locals -big props.

    Very Well Done
Adriana does an excellent job of telling some of the stories that occurred in Malibu during the Woolsey fire. Adriana has a great storytelling style that makes the podcast engaging. I’ve only heard the first two episodes and I look forward to hearing the last three. The reality of the situation was that with our residence taking action, we would’ve lost Farmer homes and we did.

Fascinating portrait of a community’s fight to survive
In this independently-produced podcast, Adriana takes you into a community of Malibu residents who fought to protect their homes during a terrifying wildfire. While you learn a lot about wildfires, surfing, and the history of Malibu, Adriana also asks what home means to people, and the lengths they’ll go to protect it. She spent years gaining the trust of the residents in order to share their stories. This is a powerful and raw portrait of a community that did everything they had to do to survive.

    Kirby Kotler - PDB’s OG
These first two Episodes were exceptional. If I knew nothing of Malibu, Pt Dume, surfing or the Point Dume Bombers I would be intrigued to say the very least , thirsting for more… definitely!!!. This group of talented individuals that produced this series , really did an amazing job. Since I fought the Woolsey Beast for 3 days in western Malibu, Point Dume and Malibu Park, I Know of what I speak. I was a bit reluctant to participate in this series but was assured their team would be truthful, detailed and respectful to our Community, in their Developement of this Documentary. They kept their word and Kept it real !!!! I have known Dru , Tim, Morgan and their families for almost 60 years. This group is as core Malibu as it gets. With regards to Sam, Keegan and all the other “Young Bucks” you represented well… PDB’s for life. 🔥👊🔥 You guys Kept it real when it really mattered. !!!! From one OG PDB to the NG PDB, RESPECT 🇺🇸🦅👊 To the General public watching… score these guys a solid 5. They have given you the real 100% in these first 2 episodes. I look forward to watching Episode 3,4&5. Also plan on sharing with many others. Thank you for Keeping your word SandCastle team 🙏🏻💜

    Heavy.
I fought back tears and enjoyed some laughs. This is an incredibly well produced series that accurately describes not just the bigger wildfire issue, but also a great representation of what the value of community is. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

    Sandcastles podcast
Really enjoying Adriana's take on the significance of place and home and what it meant to this community in the middle of a devastating fire. Nothing like good storytelling to make us think about what’s truly important.

    Highly Recommend!
This expertly-crafted series details a community experiencing one of the worst wildfires in Southern California history. The long term reporting and in-depth research allows us to look past the destruction and examine what it means to call a place a home and how grassroots community actions can transform wildfire management with broader implications worldwide. In a time where climate change is increasingly affecting our daily lives, stories like this one offer hope and allow us to better understand our adaptive potential.

Home is such a powerful force in human affairs, whether we personally think about it or not. This show is a fascinating story about ordinary people doing extraordinary things for the place they call home, showing us how we relate to home.

    an incredible story, well told
An amazing story of utter devastation with people losing everything. But through heroism, resilience and determination a community was saved and actually strengthened. I was riveted. It’s about how to sustain a real community that seems to have been mostly lost in America.
  • Ediz T.
