OUTLAWS: The Good Thief

173

Vassilis Paleokostas, aka “Greece’s Robin Hood,” has been on the lam for 14 years. In his absence, legends of his generosity have grown. But no one knows where he is, or if the stories are even true.

Here’s what we do know: there’s a million Euro bounty out for Vassilis, and a 24-hour task force trying to track him down. When he robs banks, he shares the money with the poor. When he kidnaps industrialists -- and he only kidnaps those who are known for unfair labor practices -- they give baffling interviews showing how he opened their minds. And when he escapes heavily reinforced prisons, as he’s done ... by helicopter ... twice, he does it without harming a guard.

Join host Miles Gray and our team of Greek reporters as we follow Vassilis’ trail from Athens to tiny islands to remote mountain hideouts. Along the way, we’ll meet Vassilis’s inner circle, chat with police chiefs and prime ministers, and work to understand how this thief managed to steal the country’s heart.

    Love it!
Fascinating podcast! The topic piqued my interests, and then they handled the story so well – building intrigue through excellent music, awesome interviews, and really excellent, clear and gripping writing. Bravo!

    Excellent narration
Miles did an amazing job of leading me down a path while not giving too much away, as some narrators can, with inflection. Warm, well spoken, and still elusive enough to keep the mystery. The story was well written and turned corners I did not expect. Fantastic! Thank all of you involved.

    Refreshing Change and Fasinating
This was such a refreshing and fascinating change from the true crime podcasts I’ve listened to before. There were no descriptions of someone being hacked or shot to death, and it is clear that the podcast team (which fittingly seemed to be made up mostly of Greeks) exhaustively researched this subject. This was not a fly-by-night operation. Apparently the research and production took more than a year of work. I lost count of how many people were interviewed, but it had to have been dozens; one of them was a former prime minister of Greece. One of the best parts of the podcast was that it puts the crimes of Paleokostas in the context of Greek society and culture so that we non-Greeks can understand why he is held in such high esteem by a significant portion of the population. It does so without being one-sided - the opposite view (that Paleokostas is a criminal, or even a terrorist) of the police and other authority figures is presented clearly and more than once. Finally, the first time I heard one of the Greek members of the team speak I almost drove off the road because she sounded exactly like Alicia Vikander. Dangerous driving aside, I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast and would listen to almost anything this team produced.

    Awesome
Intelligent. Humorous. Great journalism covering an incredible but true story. Every five to ten minutes I keep finding myself saying. “Unbelievable!” It mixes in cerebral aspects including the history and contradictions of Greek society. This podcast has no fluff which is incredible considering the length of the series. The pace is just right. The narrator is the kind of guy you’d want to have as your sidekick. Let me thank the producers for refusing to let this even approach the usual swill and silliness that is increasingly prevalent in many podcasts, especially ones covering crime. Their choice to give the story the quality it deserved was an excellent one. They leave it up to the listener to search their feelings about the complex morality of some of these events, something I appreciated.

    Well Done
Very well done. Great narration and doesn’t fill time by wasting 20 minutes reiterating stuff we’ve already heard. Enjoyed the story a lot. Thank you all

    More of this!
Miles! And Producers, Writer, this was riveting and super engaging! Wish there was more. Nothing like a true crime that isnt all about murderers (the worst people), yet about putting it to the exploiters and exposing the corruption behind the system. Need another podcast like this. The music/sound choices were also chef’s kiss!

    Fascinating
This is one of those stories that is so fascinating and outrageous that I’m continually asking how I hadn’t heard of these thieves yet. These characters are so good and the storytelling is so well done that I tore through it at record speed. I want to meet these thieves! Great podcast—you won’t regret listening.

Love the story but not the ads
Fun, interesting, and entertaining light-hearted story telling but the ads are onerous. Despite enjoying the story I am planning on quitting now (episode 5) because of the ads because the time allocated to ads seems to increasing.

    Interesting
I already know I will love this podcast. Seems well researched, it’s true crime and I’m a big fan of the host. I listen to his 420 day fiancé podcast, he is hilarious and he doesn’t have a boring personality. By the sounds of the trailer, this seems like it will great.
