tjb11590Over-pronouncing the letter ‘T’ (sometimes)This affectation makes an otherwise entertaining podcast almost unlistenable. Please stop pronouncing ‘letter’ as ‘leTTTer.’

EpthpGod Tier PodcastAbsolutely fascinating. The atmosphere, narration, research, and deep empathy combine to make possibly one of the most candid collections of information on Hollywood to date.

former listener22Volume of commercial jarringI like to listen to podcasts to relax, sometimes to listen to as I fall asleep. Karina Longsworth voice is soothing. Unfortunately every commercial is several decibels louder so it is not only incredible jarring but if you are falling asleep it shocks you awake. Or if you unfortunately fell asleep listening to this podcast you will find yourself awoken in 20 minutes stints. It makes the podcast completely unlistenable. Even just listening to it casually, when the commercials come on blaring it makes you jump. I have to unsubscribe because I don’t want podcast episodes to fall into my cue. It’s such a poor advertising strategy too, the volume increase of the commercials makes the commercials so irritating that I find myself despising the products advertised. You have to wonder what idiot thought increasing the volume would be effective. Yes you take notice, but you also start to hate the product annoying you. Sad that You Must Remember This has fallen into that category, but I guess the revenue was worth it to them.

frustratedfsnContent great but hyper pronunciations is distractingThis is a good podcast, the content is high caliber. But what’s with the over pronunciation on the ends of words? It’s like the narrator is trying too hard to be perfect, and over annunciating, esspecially evident when she is narrating the ads/ sponsors. It’s very distracting, and makes it hard for the listener to focus. She needs to ditch that technique and just speak naturally.
-
SarahSmokesCigarsI wanted to keep listeningThe pronunciations of the Ds and Ts and the “sounds” at the end of almost every sentence is infuriating. The content is of interest to me and I listened to some of the movie episodes from the 80s content (maybe 4 episodes). I then tried to listen to something newer to see if adjustments had been made to the delivery, but nope. It’s just too bad that this podcast has good info to share but I can’t keep doing this.

HighlandsBoyLove it!Update: turns out, Karina Longworth is a real person! Not a computer! In fact, she’s pretty brilliant. I heard her on Maron podcast and have listened to even more episodes than when I initially wrote this review. She’s awesome. The writing is incredible, the stories are compelling. I’m only a few episodes in (Sammy & Dino series) and plan to listen to them all. AI is getting amazing. The computer they use to voice this show is very lifelike; almost human! Do other shows do this?

petethekiller030The show should be called You Must Remember WomenI thought I was going to learn something about old Hollywood. What I learned was lefty views are forced into everything. This podcast covers mostly the accomplishments women in Hollywood and when they fail it’s because of men and when they succeed it’s in spite of them. All the bad behavior by women are praised as women coming into their own sexually and when it’s done by men well that’s just men being men doing their best to keep women in the kitchen.
-
FairnhonestPreachy and pompousI LOVED this podcast early one and it’s been sad to see it become so sententious. Do we need to be told for the ten thousandth time that some men treated women poorly in Hollywood? lol.
-
MichiganGal1027This is a gemI’m an old Hollywood buff since childhood (although now some of my favorites from childhood are considered classics.) I’ve completely enjoyed hearing Karina talk about the actors and the place that have entertained me for decades. My favorites have been those of the earliest days of Hollywood, filling in details that I didn’t know and probably would have never heard about any other way. Her voice is like velvet, making this an excellent listen any time of day. If you’re a movie fanatic, you can’t go wrong with “You Must Remember This”.

BlamelessAphid5Love KARINA!This podcast is wonderful- in my top 5 of all time. Fell in love at “Dead Blonds” and still look forward to every season. Went back and listened to previous seasons, too. All 🔥

StefmichkrI can’t believe I just found this!!So happy I found this podcast! I wish I had been listening from day 1… however I’m so glad I will be able to listen without delay for maybe a year. Thank you for assisting in my preparation for some nonexistent film test that will never be given to me! But if it does I’m more and more prepared to ace it! Keep it up!!
-
lkulmCongratulations!🎉Karina, I love your show, listened to every episode. Congratulations on 10 years of podcast shows, much love💗

Xjrsx1My favorite podcast everI can't put my finger on it, as this is outside of my normal listening genre but I am hooked! I really enjoy Katrina's critiques and she captivates me with her presentation style/voice. I am intentionally trying to pace myself because I don't want to run out of episodes!

nicafromnowhereNarrators VoiceThe vocal fry is maddening!

Slowdive23Fine Work From the Golden Days to the NowI have been enjoying this podcast off and on for several years now. I remember while I was in Hong Kong I popped on an episode on Yvonne De Carlo, and felt this gal knows her stuff, but also, perhaps more importantly, knows how to deliver. One thing that I know could either be regional affectation or just an alteration with vocal delivery — those hard Ts. I do wince every time I hear those hard Ts, esp in words like “water” and “cottage”, and while it personally irks me, I can turn off the annoyance given that the content is so strong and consumable.
-
willa catheterHappy 10th Anniversary! What an accomplishment! I believe I’ve now heard every episode, and enjoyed every one.

bazuemagueA love and respect for old Hollywood shines in this podcastAs a member of Generation Jones I’m old enough that I grew up in a time when silent films and early talkies and black-and-white movies from Hollywood’s golden age were used as filler for TV programming. People my age were immersed in this stuff as kids and we soaked it up like sponges. Karina Longworth gets everything right in this podcast. Her research is meticulous, and her obvious love and respect for old Hollywood and the people that made it what it was comes through in every episode. She embraces all of it, even the ugly and dark sides, and sees what I saw as a kid, the magic of old Hollywood that still exists today, despite the frequent turmoil that brought so many beloved images and sounds to the silver screen.

chicagoCKOh hey somebody thinks they sound like Moira RoseHard to follow and her attempts at the above are really distracting. Better movie podcasts out there!

GleebenStop talking like thatAlso boring

Netty WhiteGen-X’er rates superb! This is the podcast I didn’t know I needed. Thank you for all the research. And for joining forces with Marc Maron; where I first heard you.
-
bunba hotepMy favorite podcastI’ve listened to every episode multiple times and the Polly Platt series is my favorite podcast series ever. I knew nothing about her before listening, and learned that she was key in at least three of my all time favorite films. Thanks for highlighting the work of this brilliant woman. Now we need to get her a lifetime achievement Oscar. Keep up the great research and presentation!

Listener12344321Politics?Has good information but the host never misses an opportunity to inject left wing Trump hating politics. She always mentions that someone was a “white man” as though that condemns them automatically. Take everything she says with more than a few grains of salt.
-
Lola60626Her affected voiceCould not stand to listen to her narrate this podcast. Wow. So bad.
-
Grammar MavenCorrect your pronunciation , please!!Love this podcast, but it makes me cringe whenever Karina mispronounces words with “t” in the middle as “d”. Examples: important, button, Burton (Richard) are being pronounced as impordant, budden and Burdon. 😖
-
JRHassan59KarinaThis woman can’t pronounce the letter “t”. I think that should matter on a podcast.

Luminara from NarniaUsed to be my fav…I LOVE this podcast!!… except for when I don’t. The content is absolutely perfect for me. I love the long, deep dives into 20th century Hollywood & every aspect of a subject. The topics are interesting, and told in a very engaging way. However, in the post-2016 episodes, there is about one or two instances per episode where a comparison to Trump/modern politics thrown in… for no reason. If the parallels between Trump and whoever are there, the audience is smart enough to pick up on them on their own! I listen to this podcast to get AWAY from current news, and it’s like an extremely unpleasant slap when a random “this is similar a Trump rally” is thrust in when it’s not relevant at all. Most of the time, the story is told from quite an objective point of view, even when the podcast’s subject is doing/has an opinion that is quite obviously wrong. I appreciate that, because I am presented with an objective set of facts that I can make my own moral judgment on, just like an interview, or a history book. However, once in a while, there is a baffling insertion of the podcast writer’s personal beliefs about the subject spoken as if it were just a fact (for example, claiming that a politician of the time was acting on explicit motivation to uphold the white power structure, and then not citing any quotes or evidence that this is the case). If the writer’s own belief about a subject in history’s motivations are true, it does not need to be said. The audience can draw their own moral conclusions about people based on the objective facts we are given about their life. There is no reason to make these statements about someone’s motives when there is nothing given to back it up— no quotes, no interviews, no other evidence. All in all, I adore the pre-2016 episodes of this podcast, and will no doubt be re-listening to them. However, I have to take breaks as I try to make my way through the rest of the post-2016 episodes. Please, go back to the objective writing style for the podcast, and leave modern politics out of it!! History is many people’s refuge from the present and it’s frustrating to have it being unnecessarily politicized.

Yankee Doodle 30Informative but long windedLots of good information here but the podcast is long winded. Do we really need 10 shows on Louella and Hedda? So much useless garbage. The minutiae on the Martin and Davis episodes made me stop listening. A perfect example is the podcast on The Blue Lagoon in which the host thought it necessary to talk about Brooke Shields’ Calvin Klein as campaign. What’s one got to do with the other. I’m assuming Karina gets paid by the minute. Some glaring mispronunciations too. Karina, look up how you pronounce My Lai. And valet is not pronounced the way it’s spelled. Unlike many others I like Karina’s voice. I think it’s very sexy. And I love when she says “Join us, won’t you…”. It’s like she’s pleading with the listener that if they don’t listen she won’t be able to pay the rent or will have to walk the street. I admire all the work Karina’s put in but she’d be better off putting in less.
-
JAM 1972Really?I can’t believe this podcast is successful. The hosts narration is annoying and the research is amateurish. I can pick out at least one mistake in each episode ( Jay Sebring never drove a Ferrari, he drove a Porsche, for example) but anyone under 30 would never know that.
-
MrsteeveeThe narrator is so graTEENPlease stop speaking like this. The hard Ts in EroTica and the vocal fry along with the cadence was too much for me to bear. Is this for real? I cannot listen to this delivery.
-
setah5Delivery and style over substanceMade it 36 shows. I love the stories but can’t stand the voice (so forced and deliberate, completely unnatural), the pacing, the targeted ads (I get capitalism, but they are for products of zero interest or value). It’s just not worth it. I’m unfollowing.
-
Tommymoore1313Uncle Remus episodesIt’s clear you’re an apologetic and believe that white people should be ashamed and disgraced by the color of their skin. I had a hard time listening to it, because you have some good content, but your bias, and how you view things shine through in a concerning way. Terrible
-
Lorenz12Narration is nails on a chalkboardStopped listening after a few minutes. Content is interesting and I really tried, but the narrators way of speaking was making me actually angry. The hard “T”s, the additional syllables and extended vowels on ends of words, comes across as fake and as if she’s trying way too hard. Diss-a-point-eeeeng! Ha! So bad!
-
IhatepodcastsChange it to 1.25x speed(you’re welcome) Excellent analysis!

JohnnyMia1Never everHave I listened to these wonderful stories. As many biographies I have read having been enchanted by the "Hollywood" mystic and often wondered what is the story BEHIND the story. Well, wonder no more! The stories are so well researched and purrfectly delivered it is EVERYTHING! Thank you very much for the gift. Hugs, John Patrick Miami Beach, Florida
-
pbarn2000Your fascination with Man-hating has reached its limitToo bad this used to be the best film history podcast around now it’s one of the best feminist podcasts around but that’s not my taste. And now she’s looking for shadows where there aren’t any in the past to fill-in agenda so I’m not gonna waste my time with you and neither should the rest of normal people.
-
WoomsicalInsightful Film HistoryBrilliant, engaging and I love her voice almost as much as her insight. Her narrative delivery seamlessly guide you entertaining and educating you thru film history. Thank you
-
Difab4MixedThe content is great but reached the tipping point with the amount of ads. The fake Earn In story repeatedly sent me away.
-
SadieAceMakes my skin crawllllll.Turned off within 5 minutes. I really tried. Nails on a chalkboard type of feeling. Her way of speaking makes me … angry?
-
Lonesome EchoAnnoying presentationGreat content and well researched but as others have said it is a tough listen because of the delivery. I have heard Karina in interviews and other podcasts where she speaks normal but I think she may use this delivery of hard constants as a “F you” to all who invest the time to listen.
-
firsttimelistnerAmazing podcastThe best podcast out there. Five million stars!
-
MaryseoneillGreat show. Highly recommend. This is a great podcast. Thoroughly researched and well written.
-
Johnny Von TruantIf you likeIf you have a craving for well researched and told stories mixed with enough vocal fry to make a Kardashian take pause sprinkled with T’s sharp enough to warrant safety warning, this podcast is for you. Karina has never met a syllable she couldn’t over-emphasize.
-
lolofaerieGreat content but cringe (AI?) narratorNot sure If I can get past the voice that’s telling the stories. Sounds like fake person
-
RaynebowieIt gave me a lot of pleasureI’ve never been into film criticism, but this podcast strikes a great balance of history and film crit. I’ve enjoyed every episode I’ve heard (so far: just the Erotic 90s series, but excited for more).
-
Mark DoombringerLove the podcast but hope glitches get fixed!I’m fully addicted to this podcast and have been working my way through the erotic 90’s season. I have nothing but good things to say about the content, but many episodes seem to have editing issues/glitches? The show will suddenly jump back and forth, or small bits seem dropped out. I don’t think the issue is on my end as I’ve tried closing and restarting etc and the same glitches happen and I’ve seen other reviews mention this as well. A shame because I’m fully invested in the content but get taken out and frustrated by the skipping/glitched audio and end up turning it off.

connecticutgirlDon’t miss the Polly Platt seriesSo enjoyable! Love the podcast! However, the pronunciation of “T”s by Ms. Longworth is a a mystery. There are also mispronounced names of famous people (Paulette Goddard, George Cukor, the list is very long) Lately, she has done dozens, and dozens on mostly pretty mediocre movies just to have podcasts on sex in each decade …I guess speaks to what gets ratings? Why else so drawn out when the interesting points and facts could’ve been put in to one episode? Yawn. So many fascinating topics or people in the history of Hollywood that she has yet to do … Please go back to all the interesting directors not yet covered: Billy Wilder, et al, there’s just so much fascinating history that she has yet to cover.
-
JCass*Listen most nightsHappy I found this podcast. I’ve listened to many episodes 3 or 4 times just to absorb all the information in the show. I have a little tidbit of info related to Jon Garfield’s death that might bee interesting.more later.

Respect4returnofJediGreat and very informativeKarina had a wonderful way about her. She doesn’t inject “herself” into the subject matter and lets the subject matter speak for itself, but at the same time creates a an overall narrative with specific themes and oints. I LOVE HOW SHE OVER ENUNCIATES. It’s her own unique style that works. Expertly produced as well. I try not to hold the fact she’s married to Rian Johnson against her ( which isn’t easy ).
