Go Filipino: Let's Learn Tagalog

180

Tagalog, which is mainly spoken in the Philippines, is one of the most beautiful languages in Asia. Writer and self-confessed language nerd Kris Andres wants to share that beauty with you. Whether you are visiting the country for business or pleasure, married or dating someone from the Philippines, an English-speaking Filipino trying to find their ethnic identity, or just trying to learn something new, this podcast is for you. It features lessons and exercises that would help you understand the Tagalog language and (hopefully) speak like native Pinoys.

The best Filipino language learning tool!
I am a Canadian-born Filipino, and although my family primarily spoke Tagalog to each other and our other family members, they only taught their children to speak English. My sisters and I can understand Tagalog and the jist of the phrases, but learning to speak it has always been a challenge. This podcast has been so helpful in breaking down the words, their meaning, and how to properly formulate sentences. I am so happy I found this podcast, it’s truly the best one out there. But Kris, please make new ones! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

    So many ads!
It’s a great dive into Filipino language and culture, but wow are there ads galore. I understand that ads are your revenue source, but when the actual show doesn’t start till the 6th minute, then is interrupted every 3 minutes after, it makes for a frustrating learning experience.

    THANKS SO MUCH KRIS!!
I am using severa different sources to learn Tagalog and I love yours because it explains the grammar so much better than any other source. I'm so sorry you have stopped, but I still have many of your lessons left. Following you on other social media and I am very happy for you! Thanks again!

    Makes learning Tagalog accessible
I’m proud of how far my Tagalog has come by consistently listening to this podcast and doing flash cards. It’s An invaluable resource that should be part of any learners toolkit. It has brought me closer to my Filipino heritage and feels like a daily practice in self decolonization. Love the insights into culture and proverbs. Much love from Philadelphia!

I recommend this to anyone whether for mastery or newcomers.
Salamat po sa ‘yong tulong mo sa akin. I am an American Filipino living in the United States after living in the Philippines for 8 years and while I did learn how to speak Tagalog (to an extent), I haven’t fully mastered it. This series has helped me greatly to master the language and I advise anyone getting into Tagalog that it is not as difficult as it may seem. Thank you, Sincerely.

    Engaging and Fun Tagalog Learning
Maraming Salamat Po! This podcast is what I have been looking for to finally learn Tagalog. I am from Wisconsin in the US and my mom is from Baguio. Even though I grew up learning about my mother’s culture and was part of a local Filipino-American community where I learned to dance and sing songs - I never learned to understand and speak Tagalog. I’ve watched a lot of Filipino movies and tv shows but nothing has clicked until now. With this podcast, Kris Andres does a perfect job of explaining grammar, applying the lessons to realistic conversations, and breaking down pronunciation and spelling. I look forward to learning more and working towards enjoying conversations in Tagalog with my mom and family. I am only up to lesson 5, so hoping there is a lesson later on covering slang and explaining Taglish. I am happy to support your Patreon so you can keep teaching and help your listeners with their goals. I would like to be fluent someday!

    Super effective Tagalog lessons!
These lessons are amazing! I listen to them on my commute home from work and then surprise my Filipino husband (who happens to also be from Quezon City!) each evening with the new things I’ve learned. Kris is a wonderful teacher- I find the pace to be very manageable, the amount of repetition to be just right, and for me it’s so helpful that he spells out each word along the way. I'm only on lesson 10 and have already learned so much. I'm very excited to see how many lessons are available, and that Kris is still making more. Please keep up the great work!

    Excellent Tagalog lessons
I find your lessons super helpful so that when I next visit the Philippines I can converse with my family. The way you break down sentences, the pronunciation and the context of the conversation makes it easy to understand and practice.

    Amazing Tagalog Resource
Maraming Salamat Kris! I’ve always wanted to be able to speak Tagalog with my family but never had the confidence. Your lessons are all so well done and very simple to follow. Since finding and listening to your podcast I’ve been able to practice with my mother everyday and she keeps telling me how much I’ve improved. Thank you for your time and hard work!

5 stars for teaching beyond the basics
I’m giving 5 stars because this is the only digital resource that is teaching beyond basic greetings and explains the various verb focus of Tagalog which is key to learning how to speak. Please keep creating episodes for more intermediate level topics. My only constructive criticism would be to keep the pacing and material more concise. Otherwise thank you for this resource

Great show and excellent resource for Tagalog...
I came across this show as I am finally trying to learn my parents’ native tongue... I understand Tagalog pretty well as my parents always talked to me in Tagalog but never encouraged me to reply back in Tagalog... Hence I’m one of those “English Only” Filipinos... but finally after 40+ years I’ve committed myself to learn and this podcast seems to make the most sense to me and is pretty easy to follow... mind you, I am familiar with all the sounds / inflections that Filipinos speak with, so reproducing the sounds wasn’t so difficult... however, I can imagine that someone who has never been exposed to Tagalog, may have a difficult time without actually seeing someone speak it.... (i.e. see an actual mouth annunciate the words) Other than that, this is perfect for me... Can’t wait to talk to my parents in Tagalog and surprise them! Maraming salamat Kris!

    More than Language Learning
I am an adult that like many Filipinos that were born here in the US was not taught Tagalog by my parents as they wanted us to assimilate and “become” American so that we were not at a perceived disadvantage. Although as a child and young person I never really missed not speaking the language as an adult, it became not only embarrassing not being able to converse in our native language when in our native homeland, The Philippines, but I believe it also was part of me losing a strong and meaningful connection to our Filipino culture as language is a core building block of any culture. And Go Filipino has now become a core building block in learning Tagalog as an adult. Through each lesson, you not only learn language with Kris but you get pieces of history and culture as well. You get introduced to some of the sense and sensibilities and sense of humor of Filipinos. You’re learning not only the language but appreciation for the language and Filipinos and that’s pretty powerful. What adds to the enjoyment of each lesson is Kris and how genuine he is and how he never loses himself or his identify to become simply “the teacher”. We get to know a little bit about him through his sharing through the lessons which is wonderful and creates a positive learning environment. I really appreciate the Go Filipino Recommends as well which adds even more ways to immerse yourself in the language and culture of Filipinos. I’m only through lesson 11 as of this review but I’m looking forward to continuing my learning with Kris. It’s been also nice to share my learning with my family. Something really positive during challenging times in the world. So thank you Kris for teaching, sharing and creating positive change in the world. It’s incredibly valuable and appreciated and needed. I will definitely be supporting via Patreon. Salamat!

    THANK YOU
My name is Aiyana and I’m 19 years old, half Filipina and did not have the privilege of growing up with my Filipino side because my dad was always away so Chris Andres is helping me learn the basics and I am so grateful! Only on lesson 3 but TAKING NOTES so so so helpful!!!

So far so good... I’ve just been interested in learning Tagalog. This is the best podcast by far. I could really understand it after I repeat the words. The Philippines has soo many amazing people and rich culture. I would like to visit some day.

    Great podcast!
Just a few episodes in but loving it. Been looking for a good way to learn Tagalog for a while now! Kris makes the intimidating language easy to learn. My father is a 1st generation Filipino American, and his parents never taught him the language (though he understands it) to ensure he fit in in the states. I am so happy to try to reclaim some of my culture by learning myself, and one day being able to speak with my Filipino elders in their language. Just signed up with his Patreon! I’m so excited to learn more! Thank you Kris!!
  • koiyo_valentine
    I love it!

    Great way to learn Tagalog!
I wanted to learn a little Tagalog just for fun and to talk with a Filipina friend of mine. Now I’m going more in depth with learning the language than I had planned to because I really enjoy listening to this podcast. Salamat po Kris!! You make things interesting, fun, and easy to understand!

    THIS ACTUALLY HELPS YOU LEARN
Kris’ podcast has been a revelation for me. I am tisoy (mixed Filipino heritage) from my mom’s side and have always been familiar with Filipino culture but have never been able to speak Tagalog and could only understand a few basic words. My lolo and lola have attempted to teach me Tagalog in the past but lacked a certain structure and ability to provide me a long term source of education since they live far away. “Go Filipino” starts from the basics and builds upon foundational concepts that enable you to begin speaking Tagalog from the very first episode. Kris has helped me get in touch with my heritage, communicate more effectively with my family, and educate both myself and my girlfriend on the Filipino language as we intend to raise our future children bilingual in English and Tagalog. Maraming salamat Kris! You’re the best.

    The Best!
This is the best Tagalog learning podcast! I am a fellow pinay! My family never wanted to teach me tagalog living here in the states and I have so desperately tried to learn for years. Kris Andres is the best teacher ever. I love how he slows everything down and even spells out words for you. So excited to keep listening to future podcasts! If you’re wanting to learn Tagalog he is the best, hands down!

    Learning to teach my kids
This podcast is amazing! I grew up in the states and can fluently understand Tagalog because my parents speak it at home, but I always responded in English. I tried to learn it off and on, but now my husband and I are thinking of having kids and we want them to learn Tagalog! This podcast is simple and it’s awesome that Kris really starts from the basics instead of just teaching random phrases, which isn’t how anyone really learns a language anyway. Thank you for making this and please keep making more!
  • eisirk
This is exactly what I need!
The first lesson got me hooked and I appreciate you repeating the words and breaking everything down. Please continue this!!
