The Other Latif

429

Radiolab reporter Latif Nasser always believed his name was uniquely his own. Until he makes a shocking discovery that he shares his name with another man: Detainee 244 at Guantanamo Bay. The U.S. government paints a terrifying picture of The Other Latif as Al-Qaeda’s top explosives expert, and an advisor to Osama bin Laden. Nasser’s lawyer claims that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time, and that he was never even in Al-Qaeda. This clash leads Radiolab’s Latif into a years-long investigation, trying to uncover what this man actually did or didn’t do. Along the way, Radiolab’s Latif reflects on American values and his own religious past, and wonders how his namesake, a fellow nerdy, suburban Muslim kid, traveled such a strikingly different path.

We need to know life after gitmo! More! Latif & radiolab are the best reporters and podcasters out there. Thank you for doing the hard work

Latif is one of the best podcast hosts out there
This is an informative, engaging, and also infuriating podcast. Thank you so much Latif for your incredible investigative work on this intense situation. Phenomenal reporting, excellent production.

    Great
I think Latif Nasser is an incredible story teller. The Other Latif told us a story we never knew and now we do. Thank you

    Amazing Podcast
Although the podcast was often hard to listen to due to the content in regard to how detainees were treated by our government at Guantanamo, the story was so well told and Latif did a great job of humanizing The Other Latif who spent too many years locked up! I would recommend this storytelling to everyone!

    WHAT WAS THE BREAKING NEWS?!
Ok. I googled it. But way to leave us hanging there…

I Still Think About How Much I Loved This One
It’s been probably a year or more since I binged this on a (very long) roadtrip thru the American West. I love investigative podcasts and I listen to a lot of them, but this is the one I always point to as the pinnacle of the form. Better, even, than (the very excellent) Serial. Latif, you are an absolute pro. Fascinating, personal, and thorough with a ton of great, original reporting… a look at an issue that used to be at the top of the national consciousness but that got subsumed by all of the nonsense of the last administration through the lens of one person whose life was upended by it. Just brilliant.

Great Podcast - but what happened?!
This is a fantastic podcast. But we want to know what happened after July, 2021!

    Truly binge-worthy
RadioLab itself got me into podcasts, years ago. I love that they’ve branched out to produce something as captivating as The Other Latif, which begs for us to ask ourselves .. Do the excuses of war excuse us of our own actions and inactions?

This is SO powerful! You must listen to this
This podcast made me weep! The final episode is so worth listening to the entire mini series. This is the most beautifully and poetically written podcast I’ve come across in a while.

    You must listen
This is an incredible dive into the infamous Guantanamo Bay detention center. I am so proud of Radio Lab and all their hard work at putting this compelling documentary out about what can happen when information lines are crossed. As an American, it is hard to listen to the injustice that occurs on behalf of your government. Though it has been 20 years since the September 11th attacks, we must never forget… but also we must not let injustice take precedent due to fear. Abdul Latif Nasser is what happens when we do. Commendable effort and a great listen!

    Compelling!
While I was curious about the topic, I wasn’t sure I’d want to listen to all the episodes… I was entranced! So well researched. Kudos to Latif and his team, as well as the attorneys who persevered. May real justice prevail and close Guantanamo down.

    Thank you
What a blessing this team was in undertaking the research to bring this story forward. I shed tears often while listening, sometimes getting an inside look into our government can be heartbreaking.

    Well done
Did you win all the awards for this? You should’ve won all the awards for this.

    Eye opening!
So happy Latif was released recently >_<

    Brilliant
I was unable to stop listening. Artful, compassionate, beautiful.

    Well-made podcast however
This is a well researched, very good podcast however I’m really stunned at how the journalist keeps defending a man who trained at a terrorist camp and went to Afghanistan to fight. He wasn’t on vacation at a training camp and please don’t insult listeners by suggesting that.

    Excellent and Riveting Storytelling
An excellent and riveting story that is told with humanity, integrity, and an equal balance of facts and interpretation.

    Obama’s Sr Advisor A Coward
Wish the senior person who wouldn’t take the case to Obama had enough guts to publicly own their decision. Anyway, this is a riveting tale that stains the USA top to bottom.

    So Good!
It was so good, so heart wrenching. This podcast really sheds a light on the side we never hear. On the humanity of Abdul Nasser Latif. It really left my heart so heavy. Thank you for this eye opening podcast

    Excellent
I don’t care for the sound effects at the intro but this podcast was amazing. You really added the humanity back into Abdel Latif Nasser. Good on you for caring when few others did. I hope he ca. Be released soon

    Great podcast. Highly recommend.
Learned about gitmo (never knew about really) and went on to read several articles following this podcast. Also like the main story and overall podcast. Listened to it straight on road trip back in August. Thanks!!

The story is good, in spite of the host.
Maybe if we’re doing serious social justice investigative journalism, let’s widen the applicant pool beyond “guys who have the same name”? My guy, he doesn’t even pronounce it the same as you. I feel like all the interview subjects must have been rolling their eyes at this clown. He sounded drunk the whole time.

    Incredible
This podcast opened my eyes to so many things. I literally teared up at the end. I could have sat and cried. The storytelling was beautiful. This was a wonderful podcast. I can’t even express enough how much someone should listen tp this podcast. Educate yourself. These issues are important. Wow. Wow. Wow.

    I wanted to like this...
I do wanted to like this, but it fell WAY short. Investigative or bio-driven journalism weak with inquiry, afraid to ask basic questions about this man’s suspect - at best- past. 👎🏼 I so badly wanted a 2020 nod to the greatness of the Caliphate podcast, sadly this is not even in the same universe. :-/
